Thursday, April 3, Two Hundred and Twenty Eighth Year of the White Moon
Dear Mother, Brothers & Sisters,
I received by stati-graph the terrible information of fathers death. I quicken to reply by messenger at the earliest opportunity, that despite my greatest efforts, I will not be permitted to pay my last respects at his funeral, as circumstances conspire to make such impossible. The Coalition continues to throw wave after wave of infantry into our lines.
As soon as I received the stati-gram I went to see the Captain to see if it was possible to get a furlough, to which he conveyed his deepest regret that General Gatfudon has suspended the granting of all such requests, regardless of the reason.
I hope you are well and wish I could be there to console you in this time of great hardship. The Republics cause is just though, and I will gladly forfeit my life before I abandon my post.
News of fathers passing was quite unexpected, as I received post from him just last week of how work was proceeding in the fields in my absence. There was no mention of failing health or injury. I know not of the circumstance or cause of his death, as the stati-gram was merely a notification, and contained no detail.
The question that now arises is that of the financial situation of the family? Despite fathers assurances, how far has the planting progressed? Is there a plan in place for if I am not back in time for harvest? In any case, I am sending what pay I have saved back to you to help cover expenses, and should you need additional help, direct further bills and creditors to me and I will do what I can to take care of them.
Mother, I know you believe in those archaic ascended, so I pass on this passage I found in the Great Library last summer which claims to quote one of them: "In Death you will find many of the same trappings you found in Life, just shaded a little differently. As there is suffering in Life, so is there suffering in Death. So to is there happiness, anger, jealousy, and sadness. As Life begets Life eternal, so does Death beget Death eternal. Do not trouble yourself with those you think you have lost, for I know where they are, and it is certainly no worse than where they were."
