If you haven't heard already, we will be running our Dragon's Hearth event in August. (I will get my teaser out soon.. I promise..) As most of you are probably aware, running an event can be a lot of work and I have been thinking about the processes of how things get run to help make it easier for players and staff. With Dragon's Hearth one of the issues I have been running into is the lack of NPC volunteers. I know it is not because players don't love me but because they enjoy playing my game so much they don't like to miss out on a single moment. This can cause a lot of issues for my very limited staff and can put strain on the game. So for this upcoming game I want to talk to you about some ideas I had to help ease this stress. Please feel free to voice your opinions and play devil's advocate. While at the end of the day, I do have the last say on how the game will be run, I have not thought every possible scenario out and am willing to admit I can sometimes (but only sometimes) be wrong.
ENCOUNTER CARDS (also sometimes called Mod cards)
The Hammond site lends itself well to mod cards so I think I will be utilizing this plot tool at the event. I will be running them slightly different then you are probably accustomed. Encounter cards will be less common than they are at other games like Silver's Glory and will be set up in obvious places across the camp site. These encounter cards will be more in-depth and be a part of a larger story then just random monster encounters. These encounter cards will also be set up to be double hook encounters with half of a group doing one part of the encounter, and the other half doing the other (npcing for the other group).
RANDOM ENCOUNTERS
With encounter cards set up the way they are, Random Encounters will instead be ran when NPCs are available (and can happen while Encounter Cards are being ran because of the double hook model) and will mainly center around player populated areas and can range from random monsters to roleplaying npcs. Players who volunteer to come NPC for me will be assigned these roles as soon as possible to alleviate some of the problems of downtime.
PLAYER GENERATED STORY
Players interested in looking into something outside of what is out there are always welcome to come see plot and we can work something out. Most often in these cases if plot needs NPCs, players will be asked to go round up a group of people willing to NPC for them.
END OF THE EVENT BATTLE
I am being told by a Mr. Matthew "E" Boucher that end of the event battles are a must have. How do the other players feel about this? What are things we can do to make sure I have the hoards I need for this?
Please, feel free to mention anything I may not have thought about.
