Lore's are one of those neat but misunderstood skills that I want to get a conversation going on. Many times plot goes in with certain expectations that greatly differ from the expectations of the players. I wanted to let everybody know how I viewed lores and the best way to use them when interacting with me.
Q: So what sort of lores should I pick up?
A: Just about any lore will work depending but it is the use of the lore that matters more. I find the lores that work best are ones that allow you to find out new information or to perform actions rather than assuming your character already knows it. Instead of coming to me saying Lore: History, I should already know about the Battle of the Four Stars, try Lore: History are there any stories or books about the Battle of the Four Stars that my character can read or listen to? Examples of lores that allow you to perform actions are: Ritual Warping, Tracking, Communion Lores, etc.
Q: How does the level of my lores effect the knowledge I gain?
A: At the lower levels, each level you pick up has a more significant impact on your ability to gather knowledge or perform actions.
Level One: Basic General Knowledge/ Communication: Hand Signals and Basic Drawings
Level Two: General Knowledge / Communication: Basic One Syllable Words
Level Three: Detailed General Knowledge / Communication: Basic Words
Level Four- Six: Basic Uncommon Knowledge / Communication: Basic Sentences
Level Seven-Eight: Uncommon Knowledge / Communication: Common Sentences and Concepts
Level Nine-Ten: Detailed Uncommon Knowledge / Communication: Complex Sentences and Concepts
Level Ten+: Specialized Knowledge / Communication: Higher thought concepts
As with everything there are case by case basis to be considered but I hope we can start talking about lore and their place in our game. I think they can be a really neat and fun tool if everybody is on the same page.
